First Scholars’ holistic approach to supporting first-generation college students requires that we take into consideration more than just an applicant’s grades or standardized test scores in our selection process. Factors such as motivation and commitment are strong predictors of success for first-generation students according to research, and thus are important in selecting the right students for our program.
For this reason, we ask First Scholars applicants to take the Student Strengths Inventory™, an instrument that helps us measure and consider characteristics needed for success in college. The tool measures six factors that have been demonstrated to be strong predictors of both student retention and persistence in college:
In addition, we measure students’ receptiveness to support such as tutoring and participating in program activities. Based on the SSI scores, students who can benefit from the First Scholars program are identified.
University-based selection committees use the SSI scores to select First Scholars participants. Once selected, each scholar and the program director create an individualized strategic plan based on the scholar’s SSI results, as well as interventions recommended by the scores. Each applicant who is not selected is offered the opportunity to meet with the First Scholars program director (or another trained advisor) to review his or her results and recommendations.
Scholars will subsequently retake the SSI periodically, as a part of continually updating and fine-tuning their individualized strategic plans throughout their college careers.
