Plano, Texas, September 13, 2010 — The Suder Foundation’s president, Eric Suder, and his wife, Deb Suder, visited the University of Kentucky (UK) on September 9–10, 2010. The main intention of the trip was to meet UK’s inaugural group of First Scholars and the many staff members who provide support to these students.
Mr. Suder also spoke at the annual meeting of the university’s Development Council about the importance of giving back and influencing change within a community. The Suders’ visit included meeting with Dr. Lee Todd, the university’s president, and Dr. Kumble Subbaswamy, provost. They also had the opportunity to meet with Matthew Deffendall, First Scholars program director, and several faculty members who participated in the fall orientation session for First Scholars.
However, the highlight of this trip was meeting the 20 First Scholars attending UK. It was described as an “amazing experience” for both Eric and Deb Suder and the scholars. “Having Eric and Deb visit our campus inspired and uplifted our scholars. Many remarked it helped them realize they were a part of something bigger than themselves,” Deffendall said.
A visit to meet First Scholars at The University of Utah is scheduled for early February, 2011.
The Suder Foundation partners with selected public universities to provide seed funding for a holistic support program for students who are first in their family to attend college. In addition to multi-year scholarships, students selected as Scholars will participate in mentoring, tutoring, and campus- and community-engagement opportunities designed to increase their retention and, ultimately, graduation from college. Established in 2008, the Suder Foundation is a private foundation with headquarters in Plano, Texas.
